Equestrian sports come into fashion in China

Mainlanders are joining expats for lessons at riding clubs on the weekends, while premier show jumping events like the Longines Global Champions Tour in Shanghai are evolving into social celebrations

Decked out in elegant dresses and eye-catching hats, the 1,000 or so women could have been easily been mistaken for an audience at a fashion show.

But they were gathered to watch a top-class equestrian competition, the Longines Global Champions Tour, held in a square in front of the China Art Museum in Shanghai last month, the latest addition to the mainland’s broadening sports culture.

The number of Shanghai residents who take part in equestrian activities is estimated to run only in the low thousands. But that did not deter the municipal government from bidding for the rights to host the show, which is recognised by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports as the leading show-jumping series.

Jiang Lan, general manager of the state-owned sport event organiser Shanghai Juss Event Management Company, said 200,000 foreigners work or study in the city and about seven million visited from overseas every year, so the local government should foster a cultural environment that can serve international residents and visitors.

“This is part of the reason to hold equestrian contests, as we do with other international games, the Formula One and ATP World Tour, for example,” he told the South China Morning Post.

Xue Jinfan, deputy director of Shanghai Equestrian Sports Administration Centre, a government body supervising sport development in the city, said equestrian activities were gaining in popularity.

The first horse club opened in Shanghai about a decade ago, and the city now has 19, while the number in Beijing exceeds 100.

At first, the facilities were mostly to serve the expatriate population, especially the pupils of international schools. But most members now came from the local communities, according to Xue. As mainlanders’ incomes rose, their interests in sports and culture became more sophisticated, he said.

The clubs in Shanghai are scattered throughout the city’s suburbs, and more than 3,000 young students and hundreds of adults attend regular sessions. There are more than 100 licensed trainers, Xue said.

“Shanghai people are generally open to new things and many people like equestrian sports because it is not only healthy and challenging, but also combines sport and culture,” the official said, noting that a century ago horse racing took place in the downtown of Shanghai.

The Longines tour is also aimed at testing the waters for a wider adoption of equestrian activities. Western horses cannot enter the mainland, due to differences in quarantine standards compared to Europe, Jiang said. That is also why the equestrian competitions of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 were held in Hong Kong.

The Oriental Morning Post has reported the European Commission last year voted to allow a one-month lifting of the restrictions on sending horses to Shanghai after the city’s quarantine authority ensured the hygiene of the area where the horses would be kept.

With the permission, Shanghai became the first mainland city to host a Longines tour last June, About 4,000 seats were available, and 70 per cent of tickets, priced at 1,480 yuan, (HK$1,876) or above were sold. The quarantine ban was temporarily lifted again this year, and about 90 per cent of the tickets were sold.

And mainlanders appear to be taking to the fashion aspect of equestrian activities with ease. In Britain and the United States, key races are important style and social occasions. At last year’s event, many in the audience brought umbrellas to shield them from the sun and dressed casual. But last month, the women took their cues from overseas and turned the day into a celebration of fashion

“I saw a slew of girls dressed beautifully having their pictures taken by their friends or media in front of a wall of flowers,” Jiang said. “A girl came with her boyfriend and when she saw what other people looked like, she blamed our staff for not telling her the dress code and she immediately left. She felt embarrassed for not dressing appropriately.”
Club owners say it was an uphill battle to attract clients at first, but their persistence is paying off. Wu Qiang, owner of the Shanghai Songseng Equestrian Club, said he opened his club nine years ago believing that “equestrian activities would be hot in Shanghai sooner or later”. He’s still waiting to realise a profit on his 100 million yuan investment, but is encouraged by what he sees.

“I am a little bit relieved that over the past two to three years our member numbers have increased quickly and the market is more mature than before,” he said.

His club has more than 500 members. Two-thirds of the 100-plus horses at the club are breeds from Europe and 30 horses have been bought by riders. Members must pay about 60,000 yuan a year for the care and accommodation of the horse.

Xue said the main challenge to the further development of the field is the limited supply of land in Shanghai.
Takako Yoshikawa, a rider with 20 years of experience, said other impediments to wider acceptance of the activity included the high cost of training and the often remote location of some clubs.

In Beijing, the cost to rent a horse and trainer is about 200 yuan for 45 minutes, but in Shanghai the price is about 300 yuan. Clubs were located far from the city centre and traffic during the weekends was bad, Yoshikawa said.  -- 2015 May 19  SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

After the rumpus caused by someone clapping in the wrong place at the Staatskapelle Dresden's Hong Kong concert, we explain why its frowned upon these days

Conductor Christian Thielemann had an annoyed look on his face, and soon afterwards other audience members got into a shouting match over the culprit’s actions inside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

However, it’s worth remembering that in the days of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the young composer and performer expected his audience to clap in between movements, and wrote to his father in 1778 about how excited he was at hearing the warm appreciation for his music.

By around 1900, though, some music lovers had come to believe that certain works should be appreciated in complete silence, and soon the moment just before the house lights are dimmed and the audience becomes quiet became known as the “Bayreuth hush”.
Richard Wagner, who staged his operas in the German town of Bayreuth, seems to have been a stickler for silence: he demanded this “hush” from his audiences, and didn’t want music fans wildly clapping for their favourite singers either. Later on in the 20th century, with the advent of recording technology, applause was seen more as a distraction than an encouragement.

Nowadays anyone who claps in between movements is considered uncouth and hardly qualified to be sitting in the audience.

Besides clapping in the wrong places, these are five more no-nos for audience members at classical music concerts (and yes, they've all been observed at concerts in Hong Kong):
Drinking beer
Eating peanuts
Peeling oranges
Talking on mobile phones
Rattling bags

Off notes: lessons in etiquette for China’s classical music concertgoers

When 27-year-old Beijinger Cynthia Li sat in the magnificent National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) near Tiananmen Square trying to enjoy Mozart’s Flute Quartet No.3 in C major, there were some off-note moments.
“There was always someone in the audience trying to use their camera phone to take photos, using the flash,” lamented the former music student who now works at a luxury hotel in Hainan . “Others were clearing their throats.”
For a musician on stage, Li said such behaviour was akin to the audience “performing its own concert, by sneezing loudly, dropping mobile phones or even cutting fingernails”.
 Although concert hall ushers would gently remind the audience to behave, Li still felt annoyed and upset.
“This is the finest concert hall in the country, but if I feel annoyed here, imagine what musicians must endure in smaller cities,” Li asked.
Li’s concerns point to one of the obstacles China faces today as it aspires to be a cultural power.
Deng Xiaoping’s  campaign of reform and opening-up in 1978 launched modern China’s rise to prosperity and with it a hunger for culture, including Western classical music.
In the past decade, local governments have spent billions of yuan building grand performance venues across the country that have hosted some of the world’s finest ensembles and orchestras.
Thanks to government incentives and generous corporate sponsorship, more mainland concertgoers can get through the door to enjoy the greats.
In Beijing, the government-run NCPA, which took about six years and more than 3 billion yuan (HK$3.8 billion) to build, hosted 910 performances last year, entertaining 920,000 people.
Western classical music has been known in China since Jesuit priests introduced it to the late Ming imperial court at the start of the 17th century. But it did not make wider inroads until the early 20th century, beginning in Shanghai. The New Culture Movement in the 1910s and 1920s broadened its popularity; many Chinese musicians studied abroad and later at home when the Shanghai Conservatory opened in 1920s.
Music education, especially for piano and violin, is strong among middle-class families in China, as well as Japan and Korea – to the extent that many of the world’s finest classical musicians are East Asian by descent.
Unlike classical music in the West, whose audience is predominantly grey haired, more young faces are being lured to classical music concerts on the mainland.
Classical musicians from mainland China such as composer Tan Dun, and pianists Lang Lang and Li Yundi, have gained international fame in recent years. Thanks to the government’s programme of affordable tickets, an estimated 185,000 university students have seen performances at the NCPA.


















But some things haven’t changed. Zheng Xiaoying, the renowned 86-year-old female conductor of the China National Opera House, laments that while the first-class venues have been erected in record time, the concert manners of the rapidly expanding audience have barely changed.
Zheng, who founded the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra in Fujian, recalled the first performance in China by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in October, 1979.
The venue, the Beijing Capital Gymnasium, was filled with people who had just stepped out from the shadow of the Cultural Revolution. The conductor, Herbert von Karajan, stood on the stage and waited until the whole hall was silent.
“Many people were late, and we waited for a long time,” Zheng said. “Everyone held their breath because we all knew what he was waiting for.”
In Zheng’s eyes, Karajan gave an important lesson in theatre etiquette to the audience: don’t be late, and keep quiet.
After that concert, Zheng devoted herself to passing on more knowledge of theatre etiquette to concertgoers. Between movements of her concerts, she takes a few minutes to explain aspects of classical music to the audience, from the meaning of a prelude to the correct time to applaud.
“I don’t think our audiences are intentionally rude, but they’re not aware of the traditions of concert etiquette,” Zheng said.
In Chinese tradition, concerts were often held in restaurants and teahouses, where applause and cheers from the audience were a sign of  appreciation when performers hit a high pitch. In contrast, an audience of Western classical music refrains from applauding until all the movements have been performed.
The lack of national education about Western music also makes it difficult to spread such knowledge to all audiences.
“I taught them the very basics about concert etiquette 30 years ago, but I am still trying to teach them the same thing,” Zheng said.
Ke Hui, a Beijing-based music critic, agreed, saying change would take time and patience.
“They have no knowledge about it, just like jaywalking, waiting in a queue and travelling abroad – these are totally new experiences for many mainlanders,” Ke said. “They need to be helped and guided, by other audiences, musicians, and theatre staff.”
Change, in some places, is under way. Since the NCPA opened in 2007, announcements are made ahead of every concert to remind the audience about concert manners.
The NCPA management also works with Beijing schools in music education and theatre etiquette, providing 1,090 courses to 616,000 people last year alone, according to China Culture Daily.
Some efforts had started to bear fruit, Ke said, especially among regular concertgoers.
“When I first attend concerts at the NCPA in 2009, some of the audience would eat oranges, but we don’t see that anymore,” Ke said.
However, some express deeper concerns.
One Hong Kong classical music lover, who did not want to be named, said that after seeing the China National Symphony Orchestra perform at the NCPA in late April, she began to wonder if it was worth travelling to the Beijing theatre only to suffer from the audience’s bad manners.
During the concert, she observed, some people left after a movement had started, while others kept playing with their mobile phones.
Noises such as zipping handbags, flipping leaflets and loud coughs also left her annoyed.
“The musicians deserve our respect, but as a Chinese, I felt ashamed,” she said. “China has very fine music houses, and governments have gone to great lengths to arrange concerts by leading musicians. Bit if our audiences fail to behave properly, we will lose that edge.” --  2015 May 19   SCMP

Chow Wow Wow

Led by collector-restaurateur (and now artist) Michael and his formidable wife, Eva, the Chow family inhabits the intersection of art, fashion, and celebrity. Horacio Silva explains why the stylish clan is more relevant than ever.


There was no shortage of dazzling personalities at the recent Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Art + Film Gala honoring Ed Ruscha and Stanley Kubrick. In only its second year, the event, which was held in late October and raised more than $3.5 million, attracted an almost blinding galaxy of stars from the worlds of art, entertainment, fashion, and business. Artists John Baldessari, Doug Aitken, and Barbara Kruger rubbed shoulder pads with Hollywood heavy hitters Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks. Long-standing luminaries Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore shared the spotlight with heavenly young bodies like Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Twilightleading man Robert Pattinson. It was the kind of evening where no one would have been surprised to hear Leonard Nimoy broker an introduction between the artist Catherine Opie and Korean YouTube sensation Psy. 

But even amid the celebrity wattage, the glittering Chow family—its impish paterfamilias, Michael; his Gucci-clad wife, Eva, who cochaired the evening with Leonardo DiCaprio; and the Chows’ combined offspring, China, Maximillian, and Asia—stood out like one of Angelina Jolie’s legs on the Oscar red carpet. And not just because at one point in the night Michael, dressed in a natty black corduroy tuxedo, started imitating his friend Mick Jagger’s moves. 

Eva Chow led a merry dance throughout the night, owning the floor in a dizzying social waltz with the deep-pocketed potentates, starlets, and artists who inhabit her speed-dial orbit. (DiCaprio, Barrymore, and Sean Penn are among the A-listers for whom Eva serves as a godmother of sorts.) Judging from her deft ability to work the room, Eva is the reason the Chow family is more current than ever in the art and entertainment axis, why so many funds are pouring into LACMA, and why there are so many new Asian faces at their events. 

A formidable perfumed steamroller of a woman with a producer’s gift for making things happen, Eva is the ideal social and business complement to Michael—an imperturbable source of calm in designer heels. Quips friend Mickey Rourke: “She is unflappable. They should change the restaurant’s name to Mrs. Chow.” (In addition to the new Mr. Chow, opening in Malibu this month, there are, in fact, plans to eventually launch a Mrs. Chow bakery.) 

“The Chows are unique,” said Michael Govan, the chief executive of LACMA, who had the idea to create an annual fundraiser for the museum to bring together the often bifurcated universes of film and art. “They are extremely worldly, and not because he is Chinese and she is Korean and they live in Los Angeles and travel a lot. They themselves are creative and move seamlessly between the business and creative worlds—food, art, fashion, and film—in a way that’s very rare, particularly for Los Angeles.”

MICHAEL CHOW HAS been playing with the markers of art and commerce since he hung out the shingle on the first Mr. Chow restaurant, in London in 1968. From the time it opened, the chic Knightsbridge eatery—and the subsequent outposts in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas, and Miami—has become the last word in scene cuisine: the champagne-fueled place for the bon ton to go for a wonton. Presciently anticipating the convergence of the culture and lifestyle industries, Michael hitched his wagon to the fashion and art worlds from the outset. (His first wife, Grace Coddington, a top model in the ’60s who is now the creative director of Vogue, no doubt made entrées into the fashion milieu a little easier.) 

In the tortuous decade prior to opening Mr. Chow, Michael left architecture school to train as a painter. He wound up at the swinging Robert ­Fraser Gallery in Grosvenor Square, a beau monde salon of sorts where the debonair blade, who by then was sporting shoulder-length hair and Yves Saint Laurent suits, met the leading artists of the day, like Peter Blake, Allen Jones, Jim Dine, Patrick Caulfield, Paul Huxley, and Clive Barker—many of whom swapped art for a generous tab at Mr. Chow. 

As a result, the paintings on the walls (and the artists who dined there) became as much of a draw as the restaurant’s storied Beijing Duck. Michael is wont to remind people that every major artist has signed his guest book, which is also full of drawings by a slew of luminaries including Andy ­Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Francis Bacon, and Jasper Johns—“everyone except Picasso,” he says. A proto-meta-celebrity for the pre-Internet age, Michael Chow became famous for being famous among the famous. 

“In some ways, my father has been very lucky,” says his eldest daughter, China, 38. “He is incredibly hardworking, has a great eye, and has mastered the art of running a restaurant down to the tiniest detail. But he also has a knack for popping up in the right places at the right time—London in the ’60s and ’70s, when that city was the cultural center of the world; New York and L.A. during the art and showbiz booms there. It’s uncanny.” 

MICHAEL CHOW OPENS the imposing wooden front doors to his mansion in Holmby Hills, a discreet enclave in Los Angeles nestled between Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. The affable lord of the manor greets me not in his signature dapper threads (his suits are all custom-made by Hermès) but in ­knee-length shorts, long black socks, and a T-shirt; his paint-splattered moccasins bring to mind the Jackson Pollock–esque men’s runway offerings of recent seasons. 

They’re not. After having effectively put down the paintbrushes when he launched his first restaurant, Michael has begun painting again in earnest. Though initially reticent to discuss the matter, he later shows me the large sculptural canvases he has been working on (in parts painted with sheets of silver for added texture) and reveals that he is contemplating an exhibition. (“I don’t know how much he is letting on, but he has been so invested in his painting and is working really hard, like, well into the night,” says his youngest daughter, 18-year-old Asia.) 

We retire to his ground-floor library, a Macassar ebony–lined tribute to Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, the French master of Art Deco design, to whom he often refers as his god. Michael, who has designed all of his restaurants, as well as outside commissions like the Armani boutique on L.A.’s Rodeo Drive, says that from the time he was an art student, he has admired Ruhlmann. Michael rejected the reigning Bauhaus orthodoxy, which dismissed Art Deco as dated display and ostentation. “Ruhlmann, to me,” he says, fidgeting with a pen, “is the finishing of Versailles, so to speak: the culmination of the great 18th-century tradition of decorative arts, architecture, and furniture.” 

Michael certainly appears to have taken to heart the sayings of his idol (a voluptuary if ever there was one), especially the tenet that there is no luxury without fantasy. On one wall of the aristo-looking library stands a fireplace sourced from a Scottish castle; above it hangs an Ed Ruscha painting from 1973 titled Mr. Chow L.A. and rendered in organic substances like egg yolk and soy paste. Behind two handsome desks is a commanding 16th-century Belgian tapestry depicting David going to battle against Goliath. “What can I say? I take collecting very seriously, and I am very obsessive,” he offers flatly. 

True to his word, his obsession extends to religiously amassing everything from prestige cars to door hinges, Lloyd Wright–designed houses to ice buckets. An asthmatic since childhood, he is also threatening to start collecting wheezy friends like Martin Scorsese, with the view to forming an asthma club. “I collect the lot, including the greatest Ruhlmann collection of all time—of all time…I sound like Muhammad Ali, right? King complex, you know. Doesn’t mean I’m a bad person.” 
A cineast with an impressive below-ground screening room, Michael has a Socratic memory when it comes to recalling opening scenes from movies. “Name me a film,” he taunts me, “and I’ll tell you the opening shot.” Modesty Blaise, by Joseph Losey, I suggest, after he rejects Chinatown for being too easy. “Modesty Blaise?” he asks incredulously. “Also too easy. Opening scene is of me!” 

Though he is an inveterate prankster (Maximillian remembers his father once stumping British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a party by asking him, “So, Tony, what is it you do?”), Michael is not cracking wise this time. Over the years, he has appeared in numerous movies, usually as a walk-on, including as the Asian butler in Modesty Blaise and a turn as himself in the Julian Schnabel–directed Basquiat. Tellingly, the only concession to kitsch in his library is a novelty director’s chair with his name printed on the back—a gift from China. 

If Michael has his way, he may well be putting the director’s chair to use. Earlier this year, he finally completed a script for a hard-boiled-genre movie, tentatively called Pulse—a labor of cinematic love he also plans to direct. “I think it’s in a good place,” he says. “It’s a classic noir film with European sensibilities and—I know it’s a dirty word—a ‘message.’ It’s a thriller about racism.” 

The conversation inevitably turns to Voice for My Father, the autobiographical script he completed two years ago with the help of Maximillian, 34. In the deeply personal and moving story, Michael, who was born in Shanghai in 1939, ruminates on his Chinese ancestry and the vicissitudes of fortune that resulted from being the son of arguably the most famous man in China at the time. 

Michael’s father, Zhou Xin Fang, whom he credits with his creative drive, was a highborn Chinese national treasure and a famed star of Shanghai’s Peking Opera Theatre who went by the stage name Qi Li Tong (Unicorn Child). His mother, Lillian, was the daughter of a Scottish tea merchant who scandalized Chinese society when she ran off with the older, married performer. When government forces began to clamp down on Unicorn Child’s increasingly nationalistic performances, Michael’s parents sent him off to Wenlock Edge, a boarding school in England, when he was 13. He never saw his father again; his mother visited him once in England. 

“I wish I could say I went kicking and screaming,” Michael says of being banished to a school that he has described as Harry Potter without the magic. “But I was too dumb to do that. Basically, my mother wanted me to get out of there, period.” (One of his sisters, Tsai Chin, a former Bond Girl who appears in You Only Live Twice, was also hurried off, to Europe.) 

Of his parents, Michael says: “Terrible, terrible things happened to them. They were basically the first to be purged in the Cultural Revolution, but I didn’t find out about their deaths till much later.” His life, he says, has been an attempt to reconcile his love for them and their fate with his extant love of China, which he visits occasionally. “It sounds corny, but everything I do is to make China great to the West. But, of course, I have mixed feelings about my homeland because there are some things I can never forget.” 

It’s time for Michael to get back to his painting, but before he does, he admits that he has lost hope of ever making Voice for My Father. “Too political, too sensitive,” he says. Besides, having honored his past, it’s time to celebrate the present. “Now is a very exciting time for my family. We have a great foundation here, and all of us are very fortunate to be able to work in a creative field—whether it’s music, art, food, or whatever.” 

IN THE SCRIPT THAT IS MICHAEL CHOW’S LIFE, the part of the narrative arc that can’t be excised is the 1992 death from AIDS of his second wife, Tina Chow, the mother of China and Maximillian. 

Tina was an internationally renowned beauty, businesswoman, collector, jeweler, and a member of the International Best-Dressed Hall of Fame. Her incomparable style, at once devil-may-care and considered, was a magpie mix of androgyny, high fashion, and Eastern touches that inspired designers and photographers alike. Karl Lagerfeld credits Tina with having ushered in minimal chic, and Kate Moss has said that Tina Chow is her style icon. 

Even before they married—in London in 1973, where they lived in an envy-inducing double townhouse with an indoor swimming pool—­Michael and Tina were the Brangelina of their day. The media valentines to them continued when, accompanied by their two young children (5-year-old China and baby Maximillian, who had been born the year before), the Chows moved to New York in 1979 to open Mr. Chow on 57th Street. The family lived above the restaurant, which quickly gained a reputation as a hedonistic den where the tables were reserved but the company wasn’t. And with Michael becoming increasingly reclusive and focused on his Art Deco collection, Tina was front and center at the restaurant—a position she would maintain until the couple began to drift apart, in the mid ’80s. They eventually divorced in 1989. 

UNLESS THE CHOW FAMILY movie were to be made by Disney, it’s unrealistic to think that no growing pains would be part of the plot—­particularly, one assumes, when Michael marries the fashion designer Eva Chun in 1992 and she inherits two teenagers. But if tensions within the family exist now, you wouldn’t know it from talking to the Chows, who, to an outsider, scan as a creative and unexpectedly functional family. “I’d say we’re about as functional as any family,” China says, in early October, when we meet in the Marlborough gallery in New York. “We’re all fiercely protective of one another and are very old-fashioned that way. You have to remember there is a lot of tragedy in our past. It’s made a huge impact on who we are.” 

China is talking in between takes at a fashion-and-art shoot she’s styling for Pop magazine starring supermodel Liya Kebede. The location she has chosen is an immersive installation by her artist friends Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman that features a complex warren of surreal interconnected rooms, which are due to be dismantled the following day. Time is of the essence, and she routinely screams out to the photographer in her mouselike voice, “Francesco, I need you now!” Despite the uncomfortable deadline she set for herself, China, a judge on the stalled reality-TV show Work of Art, insists she really enjoys doing magazine work, particularly when the job intersects with fashion and art. 

It’s almost too neat a theory, given China’s fashion pedigree and her lifelong exposure to art. She remembers sitting on the floor as a child, coloring in elephants with Jean-Michel Basquiat: “It seemed perfectly normal to me and Max. The thing about Jean-Michel is that he was very comfortable with children, possibly more than he was with adults—and we obviously had no idea of his celebrity. He was just a friend.” 

That easy peace with her privileged childhood is shared by her brother, Maximillian, the least visible member of the family—which he likes to joke is the key to his happiness. An avid photographer, writer, and foodie who helps run the restaurants under his father’s aegis, Maximillian recalls living above Mr. Chow in New York. He says that although he and China were not allowed to look down on the restaurant from the top of the spiral staircase that led to their apartment, they found a way to ogle the crowd below. “My dad was one of the first people to have a video camera in a restaurant,” he says. “It was set up like a Bond-villain camera that you could control with a joystick. So I would sit up there and mess around and pretend I was launching missiles at people. Every once in a while, I’d pan across, and my father would be looking directly at the camera. You knew then that it was time to go to bed.” The trick, adds China, was “to move the camera ever so slowly, so he couldn’t hear it.” 

Despite the fact that Maximillian shares his dad’s passion for cinema, he says that the collaboration on the Voice for My Father script will most likely be their last. “We have figured out that working creatively together is probably not the best idea,” he says, with what sounds like diplomatic understatement. “We butt heads a little too much. When it comes to art or film, it’s difficult for us to back down from each other. It’s the same with jokes at dinner: Neither one of us will ever laugh at the other one’s joke. We sit there stone-faced.” 

EVA CHOW IS RECLINING on a Pierre Chareau sofa in the family’s gold-leaf-paneled living room, which is dominated by a towering John Chamberlain sculpture that all but reaches the 28-foot-high ceiling. Works by Sir Peter Blake and a Roy Lichtenstein interpretation of Monet’s Haystack share pride of place above the mantel. 

The LACMA gala that has consumed Eva’s life the past few months is only weeks away, but if she is stressed, she masks it well. A former designer with a successful namesake label in New York that she shuttered after the birth of Asia, in 1994, Eva looks the picture of comfort in an inky Lanvin peplum top, tapered black jeans, and ballet slippers—an image that brings to mind a comment her good friend Alber Elbaz, the Lanvin designer, made about her fashion sense never seeming de trop. 

Not that clothes stand much of a chance of imposing their will on the most protective, take-charge member of the Chow family. “Eva always makes you feel like she is in control—like the restaurant or the car or whatever it is you need is being taken care of,” Elbaz says. He also knows the other side to someone who is so fiercely solicitous. He recalls with laughter an incident a few months ago when he asked Asia to model for the Lanvin show in Paris: “I thought I had reserved the most beautiful dress in the collection for Asia to wear, but Eva had different ideas and she made me change it.” 

According to the Tao of Mrs. Chow, there’s no point doing your head in over little complications that arise (if you could call trying to coordinate Leonardo DiCaprio and Ed Ruscha’s schedules a small matter). “What’s the point?” Eva asks, redundantly. I put it to her that her existence would appear to be one long war between the sublime and the mundane. 

“Well, I’ve always led my life in a creative way,” explains Eva, a former child-protégée painter in her native Korea, which she left at age 17. “When I moved to California, I worked in film; then I became a fashion designer in New York. And I think whatever is inside of us creatively always comes through in whatever we do, whether it’s throwing a gala or a small gathering, making floral arrangements, or running a house this size or even a ­restaurant. I really think it’s in the heart.” 
It certainly would also appear to be in the genes. Asia, who recently moved to New York to study at Columbia University, is as scarily talented, grounded, and socially agile as anyone her age has a right to be. At a dinner not long ago at Mr. Chow’s downtown branch in TriBeCa, the youngest member of the Chow clan, who had recently sat for Julian Schnabel, introduced her new college suitemates to her naturally inquisitive parents. In the middle of the meal, Katie Holmes, who was in the restaurant, dropped by the table to say hello to the Chows. While the starstruck students picked their jaws up off the ground, Asia smiled at the actress, then continued to serve her friends food, as is the Chinese custom. 
A budding musician, Asia has performed in front of half the industrial entertainment complex at the family home, sung along with Stevie Wonder at the dinner table, and interned for George Harrison’s son, Dhani, the lead singer of the band Thenewno2. “Dhani calls me his Padawan,” says Asia, referring to the Jedi apprentice in Star Wars. “I’ll take that.” 

AT THE IMPROMPTU PARTY chez Chow after the LACMA gala—a late-night get-together ostensibly held for friends of the Chows who were visiting from South Korea—Asia humored her mother and agreed to sing for a room that had grown to include family friends like Hedi Slimane, Cameron Diaz, Sean Penn, and Robert Pattinson, among others. 

Michael and Eva—both in person and as rendered in herculean-size portraits by Basquiat and Schnabel, respectively—loomed large. So too did the specter of Asia’s opening acts: the actress Evan Rachel Wood, who had also performed a few torch songs at the beginning of the LACMA gala, and the singer Florence Welch, whose band Florence + the Machine headlined the event. Seemingly undaunted, Asia sat down, briefly tuned her guitar, and proceeded to sing two Bob Dylan songs, including a hauntingly beautiful version of “Mama, You’ve Been on My Mind,” which she later revealed she had learned only a few days earlier. Mama and Papa Chow were beaming. 

Around 3:30 a.m., after the black-tie crowd appeared sufficiently primed to continue partying unattended (“You guys all know where the guest house is?” Eva asked) and after Kristen Stewart arrived dressed in jeans and a T-shirt to pick up her on-again beau, Michael and Eva, who had not eaten all day, decided it was time for them to go to a late-night Korean tofu place they had been meaning to try. 

Michael rallied his brood, and the Chows made a subtle retreat, leaving the revelers to their own devices. An artful exit in the movie that is their life.   -- W MAGAZINE

The Glamorous Mr. Chow: "Tell Them, the Phoenix is Rising"

In 1952, a 12-year-old boy from Shanghai named Zhou Yinghua set out on a 30-day sea voyage from Hong Kong to London, a momentous journey filled with anticipation. However, it was the two weeks before his departure, time spent with his famous father, grandmaster of Beijing Opera, Zhou Xinfang, a powerful figure onstage who the young boy found intimidating offstage, that would later most affect him.
In London, Zhou Yinghua adopted the name Michael Chow, which would become his signature on a chain of restaurants. Returning now to Beijing to exhibit Voice for My Father, a collection of his paintings from the past two and a half years, Chow, 76, reflects on how the time with his father shaped his work, reminding him of the greatness of Chinese culture in an often West-dominated world. 

"During the two weeks, we had a breakthrough – it was the only time I was really close to him." Chow says. "Without them, I'm really screwed." 

The exhibit, which is at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing until March before moving to Shanghai in April, is Chow's first in Mainland China. It presents Chow's paintings, which use diverse materials such as gold leaf and raw eggs; his portrait collection, with works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel, Ed Ruscha, and Urs Fischer; and archival images and documents of Zhou Xinfang. The opening follows Chow's trip to Shanghai in January for official celebrations of what would be his father's 120th birthday. Before his paintings arrived, Chow sat with us in the empty gallery to discuss this new stage of his life.

The first MR CHOW restaurant opened in Knightsbridge in 1968. Today, branches in London, Beverly Hills, New York City, Miami, and Malibu boast impressive original art and Chinese food served by Italian waiters, where "expensive, difficult, and heavy is usually good." The cross-cultural chain is Chow's desire to bring Chinese culture into Western minds and stomachs. 

Initially, Chow wanted to be a painter, not a restaurateur. But his greatest dream was to be the best at something. In 1960s London, where according to Chow, "Chinese men were Manchus and nerds, Chinese women were dragon ladies and prostitutes," opportunities for Chinese artists were few, so he decided to use racism to his advantage. (If necessary, Chow would be a Manchu because "the Manchu gets sex, the nerd doesn't.") For him, creating a restaurant, "a temple to show how great China is," was the most reliable guarantee for success.

The restaurant became a "traveling musical" going from city to city "putting on performances" every night. For a perfectionist like Chow, the audience had to be completely satisfied. In his restaurants, the tablecloths have foam underneath, so that guests can rest their hands on soft surfaces. The napkin is bigger than usual so that when it is put on, the diner is in a "mother's womb." "When you accumulate every detail of the universe, and you put them together, it becomes a powerful thing," Chow says. 

As a result of such intense attention to detail and design, MR CHOW has attracted famous artists. When Chow asked Peter Blake to paint an antithesis of racism for the restaurant, he created a depiction of Chow as a wrestler-manager with half-Chinese, half-Italian bodyguards. It was the first of many to come in Chow's portrait collection, which would receive contributions from David Hockney, Andy Warhol, and the "very cute" Jean-Michel Basquiat. 

The list of artist superstars reads like the cast list for an Oscar contender. "It's like an animal thing," Chow says of his artist friendships. "If you work without any compromise and speak the truth, they're attracted to you." Often, paintings were swapped for food. At the restaurants, the guest book's reconfiguration as an Artist Book where guests not only write, but also sketch, is a record of the solidarity. 
Paparazzi frequently wait outside MR CHOW, waiting for celebrities like Lady Gaga or Beyonce and Jay-Z to walk out. "There's a desire and need to have fame, it has to do with my lifeline," Chow says of the recognition as his father's son in Shanghai before losing it in London. "I wanted to regain it." Press comes naturally for Chow – when he least expects it, a journalist will call him "out of nowhere." In Chow's world, nothing is too glamorous. Recently, Chow and his wife hosted President Obama for breakfast at their Los Angeles home. 

Unsurprisingly, Chow's wives have shared his impeccable style: in 1968, Grace Coddington, the Welsh former model and creative director of American Vogue; from 1972 to 1990, half-Japanese Tina Chow, a jewelry designer and muse of Yves St. Laurent and Issey Miyake; and now, Korean-American Eva Chun Chow, a fashion designer and board member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Chow has seamlessly connected his love, art, and business lives.
Nowadays, Chow rarely goes to his restaurant – when he does, he is another celebrity, a guest in his own establishment. Everything that Chow has done over the past half century has been a playground for his artistic talents, a harbinger to his choice to return to painting now. 

In early 2012, when Jeffery Deitch, then director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, visited Chow at his house, he saw two abstract paintings created by Chow in 1959 and 1962 when his work had exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Redfern Gallery in London. Although he knew of Chow's involvement in the art world, Deitch was still surprised that painting had been Chow's focus. 

At the time, The Painting Factory, an exhibit of new abstract painting by Andy Warhol, Rudolf Stingel, Urs Fischer, Christopher Wool, and younger artists was on display at MOCA. After visiting, Chow became convinced, "I can beat most of these guys. I want to have a go." In Beijing, Chow tells us that now he can beat "all of them." 

And just like that, at age 74, after a 50-year sabbatical, Chow returned to painting. Inspired by Joan Miró, his first works were built with sheets of silver. One of them, Miracle Painting is symbolic: it refers to Chow's redefinition of the iconic "Mr. Chow" into "Mr. Chow the painter" as a miracle. "I came back with the Miracle Painting," Chow explains, "because I have the chance to be the greatest painter."

Chow picks up where he left off in the 1960s, but inevitably incorporates his experiences in theater and cuisine. Rare metal, household paint, plastic, bumper stickers, fishnets, rubber tires, money, and cracked eggs are all given equal consideration in his compositions. When Chow gets to work, he climbs a ladder and pours paint onto a canvas below before using a paint gun to staple the materials together. It is a mighty performance, resembling the training he used to give MR CHOW waiters or the dramatic movements of his father as a Beijing Opera superstar.

In 2014, Chow finished Tell Them, The Phoenix Is Rising. From "miracle" to "phoenix," Chow favors metaphorical language as he literally paints his life as a mythological narrative. "I have a lot of resistance in the art world to put me down. You are a celebrity, you are Chinese. So I love it," Chow says. "In a movie, the hero always goes down. But the greater the villain, the greater the hero's rise." 

Unabashedly, he makes a request to the journalists writing the story of his return: "Tell them, the phoenix is rising."

Throughout his globetrotting life, Chow has shifted from actor to architect, restaurateur to painter. His life is a collage as is his art, "half sculpture and half painting," made up of Eastern and Western aesthetics. Influenced by his life in London and the United States, his method and techniques are Western. However, harkening back to his roots, Chow believes his content is Chinese. In fact, he calls his paintings "Expressionist Landscapes," a reflection of the expressionist quality of his father's Qi Style of Beijing Opera. 

Beijing Opera, which combines singing, speech, mime, dance, martial arts, and acrobatics, originated in the late Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) and was rejuvenated in Republican China (1912–1949). "The DNA of the Chinese culture is structured," explains Chow. "In Beijing Opera, you hold a stick like holding a golf club, which means you are riding a horse. If you are trained, you walk like this." Standing up, he demonstrates an elegant walk that reminds us of his father onstage. "I have this deep down foundation from the East, from my father," Chow says of Zhou Xinfang's creation of one of Beijing Opera's most celebrated forms. 

In 1909, after years of success, Zhou's voice cracked, losing its original strength and vitality. Initially, it appeared that his gift was gone. But the handicap turned into an opportunity. For Zhou, Beijing Opera was not only about singing; at the core, it was about connecting with the audience. Since he valued truth and authenticity as ways to achieve this goal, Zhou genuinely embraced his cracked voice as a crucial part of his identity, leading him to reform Beijing Opera. As Chow says, "A master hides his weakness, while a grandmaster uses his weakness."

When Chow's family sent him to London, it was with good intention. But for the young boy, it was "like a motherfucker." At boarding school, Chow felt like a "pathetic" isolated misfit. He struggled with his studies, unable to pass the advanced levels for university admission, and failing almost all ordinary levels – the only two that he passed were Chinese and art. 

Luckily, Chow was charming and "literally talked" his way into architecture school. With newfound freedom, he explored London, going out dancing in clubs every night. Although his work received high praise, including the two paintings that Deitch would see years later, such experiences were uncertain. "I remember going to galleries and begging them to look at my work. They wouldn't," Chow recalls. Soon, Chow began looking for other means to make a living.

He never held down a job for more than a month. At one point, he was living in the basement of the apartment where he was a janitor. "One night, there was a drunk tenant who came back late," Chow recalls. "I was so poor but he never tipped me. So now I tip everybody." Even a mega-successful restaurant empire later, Chow's recollection of his former poverty is vivid.

During this time, Chow took up acting, making 16 movies as an actor. Being in big movies with big stars was exciting. He was usually a clichéd Chinese character, but the glamour of fame and need to make a living outweighed his reservations about reinforcing racial stereotypes. "I've always been a show-off," Chow says. "At the same time, I'm very shy," he admits. 

But Chow still struggled to make ends meet. At one point, he starved for four days. When he ate again, acute constipation landed him in the hospital. The intense pain "came in waves." To distract himself, Chow would smack his face so as to transfer the pain from his stomach to the pain in his cheek.

In 1959, Chow took a black-and-white self-portrait, which captures him hurling water at the camera. In the background, his body is visible, but his face, obscured by the water, remains blurry. At the time, Chow wanted to be "rebellious," and "break the rhythm to get attention." Although he was not conscious of a surrealist quest, Chow understands, "It comes from my mother and father. That's how I deal with the world I live in and that's how it got me out of this terrible situation." 

They did not know it, but father and son were simultaneously rebelling. The same year, Zhou joined the Chinese Communist Party and was asked to create a show honoring the tenth anniversary of the PRC's founding. Zhou created Hai Rui Submits a Memorial, a show based on a righteous official in the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), Hai Rui, who dissented from the emperor. It had political implications given that Chairman Mao was the only "emperor" at the time. When the Cultural Revolution took place in 1966, Zhou was under continuous attack. 

Jailed in 1968, Zhou later died in 1975. "I never knew when he died and never had the chance to mourn his death. It's never ending," says Chow. It was only after China's 1978 Reform and Opening Up policy that Chow was able to learn of his father's death through strangers. 

A theme of injustice has been part of Chow's family since the beginning. His quarter-Scottish mother, Qiu Lilin, was disowned by her wealthy tea plantation family when she eloped with Zhou Xinfang, a "lowlife" actor. "It's called an injustice," Chow reflects. "And then they sent me to England and there's racism against me. I become injustice. So I become radical and revolutionary. This is internal and inherited." Consequently, Chow has never stopped trying to combat lifelong frustration faced by his parents and himself – disownment, jailing, and racism.

Now, in Chow's eyes, the 21st century holds great hope for bridging Chinese and Western cultures. "At this time art is very free," Chow says. "It's a good time, especially for Chinese artists in Mainland China, because they have a lot of catch up to do."

For Chow, his return to painting might be just a desire to rewrite the ending of his life's movie script. But for China's contemporary art scene, Chow sets an example of re-invention. "China is one of the greatest cultures in the world, but it did decline for many centuries. Usually if you are there long enough, you start to decline," says Chow. Now, Chow hopes that Chinese culture may thrive through new forms where West and East mingle, in imitation of what he has done. "Great culture reaps great art," he says. "China at this moment has no excuse not to produce great culture and art." 

Before going to Shanghai for the celebrations of his father's life, Chow remarked on how his life resembles a fantasy: "In a movie, you come here to Beijing for a show, then you go to Shanghai and have six days that are about your father." As the decades have gone by, Chow has become more convinced that he is living his dream life as if within a script. As a hero's journey goes, he does not want the script to end with a peaceful life in Los Angeles. Instead, he has come back to China with a reputation he has worked hard to regain, both as the son of Zhou Xinfang and a successful artist in his own right. This Odyssey-like homecoming to China may turn out to be the perfect ending to his glamorous movie life. That is, unless Chow wants to reinvent it again.
